With respect to the good Doctor, I do not think that Persicue meant to let Jim take the fall, as it were, for everything. For instance, I cannot imagine us saying "Yes, Constable, we were all hunting snipe/dueling elsewhere, it was Jim who single-handedly shot, burned, mutilated and massacred the entire congregation and then set the church on fire." Merely, whenever our story fails to explain things, It Was Jim's Fault.

On another subject: I do like Stoatley's suggestion of the hole in the bag of iron filings. And about our recent, regrettably public disagreement: I think that neither Stoatley and myself are in a position to sustain a frictionless argument within the realm of cilivised discourse at this point in time, for which I humbly beg your forgiveness.
